Replacement for the Shore Protection Manual (SPM)

The CEM is the modern replacement of the Shore Protection Manual, the basis for coastal engineering practices in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and most standard engineering projects throughout the world. It incorporates contributions from worldwide experts/practitioners and latest research techniques, procedures, and information. The CEM provides broader coverage of all aspects of coastal engineering than the SPM. New sections have been added on navigation and harbor design, dredging and disposal, structure repair and rehabilitation, beach restoration, wetland and low energy shore protection, cohesive shores, risk analysis, field instrumentation, numerical simulation, the engineering process, and other topics.

CEM Professional Edition (CEM 2.01 PE) is the personal computer version of the CEM and is a fully interactive, multi-media resource, containing programmed formulas, live/interactive graphs, and animated visuals. CEM 2.01 PE is a Windows-based CD-ROM document that incorporates all the tools and procedures used to plan, design, construct, and maintain coastal projects. CEM is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide including the basic principles of coastal processes, methods for computing coastal engineering planning and design parameters, and guidance on how to formulate and conduct studies in support of coastal flooding, shore protection, and navigation projects.

CEM Standard Edition (2.01 SE) contains all the material in CEM 2.01 PE except the capability of using the programmed example problems and equations. This version is designed for general use as a reference or instructional material and is priced substantially lower. Currently CEM 2.01 SE is only sold with a hardware key.

The Coastal Engineering Manual contains six Parts containing over 3,000 pages if printed. Both CEM 2.01 PE and SE replicate the entire manual produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and contain:

Part I - Introduction. This Part describes the scope and applicability of the material, discusses the coastal diversity of oceans and lakes, highlights the history of coastal engineering, outlines the content of the manual, and provides help in using the electronic version.

Part II - Coastal Hydrodynamics. This Part contains 8 chapters on water wave mechanics, meteorology and wave climate, estimation of nearshore waves, surf zone hydrodynamics, water levels and long waves, hydrodynamics of tidal inlets, harbor hydrodynamics, and hydrodynamic analysis and design conditions.

Part III - Coastal Sediment Processes. This Part contains 6 chapters on coastal sediment properties, longshore sediment transport, cross-shore sediment transport processes, wind-blown sediment transport, erosion, transport, and deposition of cohesive sediments, and sediment transport outside the surf zone.

Part IV - Coastal Geology. This Part contains 3 chapters on coastal geologic environments, classification and morphology, and morphodynamics.

Part V - Coastal Project Planning and Design. This Part contains 7 chapters on the planning and design process, site characterization, shore protection projects, navigation projects, sediment management at inlets/harbors, and coastal engineering for environmental enhancement.

Part VI - Design of Coastal Project Elements. This Part contains 8 chapters on introduction to coastal project element design, types and functions of coastal structures, site specific design conditions, materials and construction aspects, fundamentals of design, reliability based design of coastal structures, design of specific project elements, and designing for repair, rehabilitation, and modification.

Glossary. The glossary is a compendium of coastal terminology and definitions.

SBAS included with CEM2.01 PE
Also included free on the CEM 2.01 PE CD, is the model SBAS (Sediment Budget Analysis System). SBAS provides a framework for formulating, documenting, and calculating sediment budgets, including estimation, of uncertainty and representation of multiple inlets. Part V of CEM 2.01 PE includes comprehensive information on calculating sediment budgets using SBAS. Because the CEM relies on the user having access to recent versions SBAS, Veri-Tech is providing the latest version (SBAS2001 Version 2.0) free of charge.
           

User Environment
CEM 2.01 PE or SE is written in C++, allowing fast operation speed. The basic screen layout is a left-handed tree view control panel with a right-handed panel display for the HTML and applets that make up the "Live Document" (Click for image of screen layout). CEM 2.01 PE or SE user interface consists of an integrated set of windows, tools, menus, toolbars, and directories that allow the user to easily move through the entire CEM, using rigorous cross-indexing and search features, to access desired information. Hot-Keys exist throughout the manual that lead the user to an interactive toolbox of coastal engineering design and analysis codes (CEDAS). Many equations in CEM 2.01 PE are programmed, but with the purchase of CEDAS a complete array of sophisticated models are available at the touch of the mouse.
 

CEM Security Options
 

Option 1

CEM can be shipped with software security protection designed for installation on a single PC. After installation is completed, the first attempt to access the software will result in your PC producing a Unique ID. Call in or email Veri-Tech, Inc. your Serial Number and Unique ID for an appropriate unique Unlock Number. Software security is provided at no additional cost.

Option 2

CEM may be secured using a Rainbow Sentinel hardware key. This device, called a dongle, must be plugged into a computer where the software is being used. The Sentinel Software is installed during the CEM installation process. The Sentinel device tracks the number of simultaneous users of CEM. If the number of users exceed the total number of licenses purchased, a message will be given to "extra" users that they must wait for access. CEM must be installed on every "client" machine that will potentially use these products.

Dongles are available for USB ports only. Greatest flexibility is achieved by purchasing separate single-user keys in place of a multiple-user key. For example, assume you have 3 user licenses and 3 single-user keys. If a colleague is on travel, they can take one of the keys with them, leaving 2 keys for use on the company network. This permits the traveler to use the product in the field without having to call back and connect to the company network for permission to use the software.

Notes:
VISTA has proven to be a problem. CEM will work under VISTA if you emulate XP.  If you are using the hardware-secured version, contact us for a replacement file for the Security software. 

CEM 2.01 PE (or SE) has a hard drive footprint of approximately 150 MB. IE5 is provided with product. IE5 or later version release must be installed, but DOES NOT need to replace your existing default browser.
